The Docent Handbook 2
The revised edition of our popular docent handbook - The Docent Handbook 2 - is now available for purchase. This valuable resource for docents, guides and interpreters from museums and cultural institutions of all types in the US and Canada is a stimulating and informative "nuts and bolts" manual.
The Handbook 2 keeps the chapter structure and much useful information from the original handbook. The revised edition adds a new section on family groups, and augments the sections on school groups and serving visitors with special needs in Chapter 5. The "Arts and Artifacts of Indigenous Peoples" section in Chapter 9 provides appropriate language and guidelines for current practice. Chapter 10, "Dealing with Problems," is re-structured and includes more techniques and ideas. There is a new section on "Technology and the Docent" in the final chapter. Examples that reflect a wider range of museum settings have been added throughout the handbook.
The original Docent Handbook, published more than 20 years ago, has been a helpful collection of information for new and veteran docents, and has been an important tool for museum educators in their training of docents and guides. The Docent Handbook 2 updates and expands the original handbook with new sections, material, and additional references to reflect the increasingly diverse audiences for museums, the arrival of our digital world, and evolving tour strategies geared to museums of all kinds.
